Eira’s Weekend in Newport: Finding Community One Bite at a Time

There’s something rather special about arriving somewhere with an empty stomach and an open mind.

Today I spent the day at the Big Food Festival in Newport, and whilst the food was certainly worth the journey, it was the people who made the lasting impression.

From the moment we walked through the gates, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The children disappeared towards the family activities with smiles that only grow wider as the day unfolds, leaving me free to wander through rows of independent traders, local producers and talented artisans.

Every stall seemed to have a story.

A beekeeper spoke passionately about the importance of pollinators. A baker proudly explained how each loaf was made using traditional methods. A cheesemaker encouraged visitors to sample flavours inspired by the Welsh countryside.

It reminded me that community isn’t something we simply inherit.

It’s something people choose to build.

One conversation at a time.

One small business at a time.

One shared experience at a time.

As I sat beneath the trees with a freshly brewed coffee, watching families, friends and neighbours enjoying the sunshine together, I found myself thinking about Naturism Wales.

People often ask what naturism has to do with community.

For me, they’re inseparable.

Naturism isn’t simply about spending time without clothes. It’s about creating places where people feel accepted, valued and comfortable enough to be themselves. Those same values—acceptance, kindness, respect and community—were quietly on display throughout today’s festival.

Nobody cared what job you did.

Nobody cared how old you were.

People were simply enjoying good company, supporting local businesses and making memories together.

Perhaps that’s what Wales does best.

Whether we’re gathered around a campfire, sharing a meal at a festival or enjoying an afternoon beside a lake, our strongest communities are built through simple moments that remind us we all belong somewhere.

I left Newport with a bag full of local treats, tired children in the back of the camper van and several pages of notes ready for future adventures.

The food was excellent.

The conversations were even better.
