Fool’s Paradise? Maybe That’s Exactly What We Need

Today is Fool’s Paradise Day.

At first glance, it sounds almost insulting. A day for dreamers. For people with their heads in the clouds. For those who haven’t quite accepted the “real world.”

Perhaps that’s true.

But I’ve been wondering…

When did we become so afraid of being happy?

We’re expected to be productive. Busy.

Available. Connected. Always planning tomorrow before we’ve finished enjoying today.

Even our hobbies can start to feel like another appointment in an already overflowing diary.

Maybe being a little foolish isn’t such a bad thing after all.

Maybe today is permission to switch your phone onto silent.

Permission to sit in the garden with a cup of tea and watch the clouds drift by.

Permission to paddle your feet in a stream, read a chapter of that book that’s been gathering dust, or simply close your eyes and listen to the wind moving through the trees.

No goals.

No expectations.

No guilt.

Just a few precious moments that belong entirely to you.

I’ve often thought that paradise isn’t really a place. It’s a feeling.

It’s the smell of freshly cut grass on a warm afternoon.

Children laughing as they splash about in a paddling pool.

The warmth of the sun on your skin.

Friends who make you laugh until your cheeks ache.

A peaceful walk where nobody needs anything from you.

Those moments don’t cost a fortune. They don’t need a passport or months of planning. They happen quietly, often unnoticed, while we’re busy chasing something bigger.

Perhaps that’s the real foolishness.

We spend so much of our lives searching for happiness that we forget to notice it sitting beside us.

So today, I have a little challenge.

Do something wonderfully ordinary.

Take your lunch outside.

Watch the sunset.

Sit beneath a tree.

Visit the beach.

Float in a pool.

Lie in the grass and count the clouds.

If anyone tells you you’re wasting your time…

Smile.

After all, today is Fool’s Paradise Day.

And if finding joy in simple moments makes us fools, then perhaps the world could do with a few more of them.

What does paradise look like to you?
