Could I Live Naturist Van Life in Wales? I Think I’d Like to Find Out

There’s a particular kind of morning I keep imagining. I slide open the van door, put the kettle on and outside there’s nothing but Welsh mountains, sea or a field disappearing into the mist. No hotel timetable, no suitcase to unpack and nowhere I particularly need to be. For somebody like me who loves naturism, wild swimming, hiking and disappearing down roads simply because I’ve never driven them before, van life and Wales feel as though they were made to meet.

But naturist van life isn’t about parking beside a beauty spot, throwing the doors open and deciding the whole of Wales has become your private naturist campsite. The freedom comes from finding the right places. A secluded pitch on private land with the owner’s blessing, a naturist campsite, or somewhere deliberately welcoming campervans gives me something far better anyway: privacy. I can wake naturally, have breakfast outside when the setting allows it, pull on my boots for a hike and come home to my tiny house on wheels. Naturism becomes part of the rhythm of travelling rather than something I’ve travelled somewhere specifically to “do”.

And just imagine the route. I could begin among the mountains of North Wales, follow the coast towards Llŷn, cross to Anglesey for a few nights, then gradually point the van south through Ceredigion and towards Pembrokeshire. There would be swims, coastal walks, little Welsh villages, farm shops and those gloriously unplanned moments when I spot a road disappearing towards the sea and think, I wonder what’s down there? That’s the bit of van life that gets me. My accommodation isn’t waiting at the destination — it’s coming on the adventure with me.

There are responsibilities with that freedom, of course. In places such as Eryri you can’t sleep overnight in car parks or simply wild camp without the landowner’s permission, and I’d always check the rules before stopping anywhere. I’d rather spend money with a campsite, farmer or local business that genuinely welcomes me than become the van everybody wishes hadn’t turned up. Done thoughtfully, though, naturist van life could offer something rather special: not escaping Wales, but experiencing more of it. A different view outside my door whenever I choose, a swimming costume I rarely need to pack, and absolutely no argument about who’s carrying the suitcases. Now where did I put those van keys?
