I Thought Today Was About the Children… Until This Happened

If you’d asked me this morning what today would be about, I’d have said snacks, endless questions and trying to remember who wanted to do what.

Like every parent, I expected the first full day of the summer holidays to belong entirely to everyone else.

I was wrong.

Don’t get me wrong, there were plenty of requests for food. I’m convinced children can hear a fridge door close from three rooms away.

Before I’d even finished making one drink, someone was asking what was for lunch. An hour after lunch, the conversation had already moved on to tea.

The garden became a football pitch, a campsite, a race track and, at one point, somewhere to hunt for imaginary treasure.

It was noisy.

It was busy.

It was exactly what the first day of the school holidays should be.

Then, sometime in the evening, everything changed.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

The house settled. Conversations faded. The garden, which had echoed with laughter and battle cries all day, became still again.

I made myself a cup of tea and wandered outside.

As I sat there, I realised something I’d completely overlooked.

All day I’d been making sure everyone else was enjoying their summer.

I’d forgotten to notice mine.

The evening sun was warming the patio, a gentle breeze stirred the flowers and a blackbird was offering what sounded like its own review of the day from somewhere high in the trees.

For a few precious minutes, nothing was expected of me.

I simply sat.

People often ask what it’s like to live as a naturist.

They expect stories about beaches, holidays or special events.

The truth is rather less dramatic.

It’s moments like this.

It’s drinking your morning coffee before the rest of the house wakes.

It’s watering the tomatoes because they’ve enjoyed the sunshine as much as you have.

It’s reading another chapter of a book because there’s nowhere else you’d rather be.

It’s feeling the warmth of the evening air and remembering that home can be the most relaxing place in the world.

Naturism, for me, has never really been about taking my clothes off.

It’sk about taking the pressure off.

It’s about creating a home where I can slow down, breathe a little deeper and remember that life isn’t measured by how much I managed to squeeze into a day.

Sometimes it’s measured by whether I noticed the birds singing.

Whether I looked up at the sky.

Whether I gave myself permission to simply exist for a little while.

The first day of the summer holidays reminded me of something I’d forgotten.

Children don’t just need adventures.

They need parents who occasionally pause long enough to enjoy them too.

And perhaps we all need that reminder.

Tomorrow the fridge will almost certainly open another fifty times. There’ll be more laughter, more mess and another debate about whose turn it is to help clear up.

I wouldn’t change a second of it.

Because this evening reminded me that the best part of today wasn’t getting through it.

It was finally noticing it.

Perhaps that’s why I love living this way.

People often think naturism is about escaping somewhere special.

I’ve discovered it’s often about discovering that the place you’ve been searching for has been waiting just outside your back door all along.

What simple moment at home has made you stop recently and think, “Life is good”?
