School’s Out… Now the Real Work Begins

The school gates have finally closed for the summer.

For the children, it’s six weeks of freedom. For parents? Well… let’s just say it’s a slightly different experience.

The food shopping bill mysteriously doubles overnight because apparently children need feeding every seventeen minutes once they’re home. The fridge becomes a revolving door, the cupboards are emptied at alarming speed, and someone will inevitably ask, “What’s for tea?” approximately twenty minutes after finishing lunch.

Then comes the annual ritual of convincing increasingly independent children that yes, they really do need new school shoes, and yes, trying them on is part of the process. Somehow every shoe shop becomes a battleground, every uniform aisle feels busier than the M4 on a bank holiday, and every parent quietly wonders why children seem to grow two shoe sizes between July and September.

Evenings bring their own negotiations.

“It’s still light outside.”

“I know.”

“I’m not tired.”

“I know.”

“But it’s the holidays!”

“I know…”

Just because there’s no school tomorrow doesn’t mean the day shouldn’t have purpose. Some of my happiest childhood memories weren’t made by sleeping until lunchtime. They were made by getting up, heading outdoors, finding an adventure and making the most of the long summer days. There’s something rather magical about breakfast in the garden, a spontaneous walk, an afternoon by the sea or simply spending time together without watching the clock.

That’s something I think we’ve forgotten a little.

Summer isn’t measured by how late we stay up.

It’s measured by the memories we create.

And goodness me, there’s going to be plenty of those over the coming weeks.

Naturism Wales is about to enter one of its busiest and most exciting periods of the year. Summer Camp is now only a week away, bringing together old friends, first-time visitors and families from across Wales and beyond for days filled with laughter, activities and community.

No sooner has camp packed away than many of us will be meeting again at Farmer Phil’s Music Festival, where music, friendship and the great outdoors come together in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

Between those bigger events we’ll be enjoying beach days, garden gatherings, pizza evenings, countryside walks and all those smaller moments that often become the memories we treasure most.

For our families, it’s not really about being somewhere without clothes.

It’s about being somewhere without pressure.

Where children can play, adults can breathe, conversations happen naturally and nobody needs to pretend to be anything other than themselves.

These six weeks will undoubtedly cost us a little more, test our patience from time to time and leave us wondering how the washing basket fills so quickly.

But they’ll also give us opportunities that only summer can provide.

So if you’re planning your holidays, don’t forget to leave room for a little adventure, a little community and perhaps a few new friendships along the way.

The school holidays have begun.

Now let’s make them count.

What are your family’s favourite summer traditions, and what are you most looking forward to over the next six weeks?
