The Charity Shop Coat That Started a Conversation

I popped into a charity shop recently looking for a winter coat. Something warm, sensible and preferably with pockets deep enough to accommodate my phone, keys and the occasional emergency biscuit.

I came out without a coat, but with a rather lovely conversation I hadn’t expected.

It began with a green velvet jacket hanging between two enormous winter parkas. Beautiful thing. Completely impractical for November in Wales, unless I planned to spend the afternoon pretending to be a Victorian botanist.

Naturally, I tried it on.

An older woman beside the mirror smiled and said, “Oh, that’s lovely on you!”

I thanked her, turned sideways and discovered the sleeves ended somewhere around my elbows.

“Perhaps not,” I laughed.

“Never mind, love. Someone will absolutely adore it.”

And that little sentence stayed with me.

She didn’t suggest I needed different arms, a different figure or a different anything. The jacket simply wasn’t right for me. Somewhere, there was another person for whom it would be perfect.

We ended up chatting about clothes, changing tastes and the extraordinary things people donate. She told me she’d once found a beautiful evening dress for a few pounds and worn it to a wedding.

I confessed to buying a decorative wooden duck because I liked its expression.

Apparently, that’s a perfectly reasonable purchasing decision.

What struck me afterwards was how refreshing the whole encounter had been.

We’re surrounded by suggestions about what we should wear, how we should look and which version of ourselves we’re supposed to present to the world.

Yet there we were, two women in a charity shop, enjoying clothes without making either of our bodies the problem.

There’s something wonderfully liberating about that.

Perhaps it’s one reason I’ve always appreciated the acceptance I find within our naturist community. Nobody needs to become somebody else before they deserve kindness.

Anyway, I eventually found a coat in another shop. Sensible, warm and blessed with enormous pockets.

And yes, I went back for the wooden duck.

He’s now sitting on my bookshelf looking deeply disappointed in everyone.

Have you ever gone shopping for something practical and come home with something completely unexpected that you absolutely love?
