Vritomartis, Crete — Where the Mountains Meet the Naturist Sea

There are places I look at and immediately start mentally packing a bag, and Vritomartis in southern Crete is one of them. Sitting just outside Chora Sfakion, with the White Mountains rising behind it and the Cretan Sea ahead, this family-run naturist resort feels wonderfully removed from the busy side of Greece. There are hotel rooms and bungalows scattered through the grounds, a 25-metre naturist swimming pool and that delicious combination of sunshine, mountains and sea that makes me wonder why I’m still sitting in Wales. The naturist experience is refreshingly straightforward. Outdoor areas are naturist or clothing-optional during the day, while the pool and Filaki naturist beach are nude areas. Filaki is around 700 metres away — about a 15-minute walk — and there’s a free minibus when walking feels far too energetic. Once there you’ve got clear water, sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, toilets and a beach bar. Back at Vritomartis there’s tennis, volleyball, mini golf, archery and other activities, although I suspect I’d become exceptionally talented at lying beside the pool. (Vritomartis Naturist Resort)

I’d definitely explore beyond the resort too.

Chora Sfakion is only about two kilometres away, while Vritomartis organises naturist boat trips and walks including the spectacular Samaria, Aradena and Imbros gorges. There are also excursions to nearby villages, Chania and Rethymno. That’s what sells this one to me: I could have the comfort and company of an established naturist resort when I wanted it, then disappear into one of Crete’s most dramatic landscapes when adventure called. So, what does it cost and how do you book? 

Current 2026 prices start at €98 per person per night for a standard mountain/garden-view double room, including breakfast and dinner. A side-sea-view room is €109.50, sea-view €120.50 and a standard bungalow €135.50 per person per night. You can check your dates and availability directly through Vritomartis. If you’re flying into Chania, the resort is roughly an 80km/1½-hour drive away and can arrange an airport taxi transfer, currently €110 one way.
