Does Anyone Else’s Brain Wander Off Mid-Conversation?

I’ve reached the conclusion that my brain has a personality all of its own.
It’s a lovely personality.
Just… not a particularly focused one.
I can set off with the very best intentions. A basket of washing tucked under one arm, absolutely determined that this is the task I’m about to complete.
Then, somewhere between the stairs and the utility room, I notice a thirsty houseplant.
While fetching the watering can, I spot a mug that belongs in the kitchen.
The mug reminds me the dishwasher needs emptying.
While putting the plates away, I realise I’ve almost run out of tea.
Tea reminds me I should make a shopping list.
The shopping list reminds me I really ought to check I’ve packed everything for Summer Camp.
Three hours later, I’m standing in the garage holding a torch, wondering why I’m wearing gardening gloves.
The washing basket, meanwhile, is exactly where I left it.
I imagine it’s judging me.
People often describe an ADHD brain as being distracted.
I’m not sure that’s quite right.
To me, it feels more like every thought is equally interesting.
One thought doesn’t politely wait for another to finish. They all arrive together, waving enthusiastically like friends who’ve spotted each other across a campsite.
“Look at this!”
“Oh, and don’t forget that!”
“While you’re here…”
It’s wonderfully chaotic.
Conversations can be just as entertaining.
Someone asks how my week has been.
I begin by talking about washing.
Somewhere in the middle we visit Welsh cakes, red kites, whether sheep recognise familiar faces, camping stoves, the weather forecast, and the importance of remembering spare batteries.
Eventually…
I remember the original question.
Usually.
Preparing for Summer Camp is where my wonderfully wandering mind really earns its reputation.
Most people make a checklist.
I make a checklist.
Then another, because I’ve misplaced the first one.
I find the original tucked inside a book I’d picked up while looking for the camping lantern.
The lantern reminds me to charge the batteries.
Charging the batteries reminds me I should probably wash my favourite hoodie.
Ah yes…
The washing.
Still waiting patiently.
The funny thing is, I wouldn’t swap this curious mind for anything.
It notices little things.
The first dragonfly over a pond.
The smell of rain arriving before the clouds.
Someone sitting quietly on the edge of a gathering who simply needs a friendly smile to feel welcome.
Perhaps that’s the trade-off.
Life may take me on the scenic route more often than planned, but I notice an awful lot of beautiful things along the way.
Now then…
Why did I walk into this room?
I’m sure it was something important.
Oh well…
I’m certain I’ll remember.
Eventually.
A thought to leave you with…
Has your mind ever taken you on an unexpected adventure before you’ve even finished the task you started?
