From North Wales Naturist Society to Naturism Wales: How Our Community Grew
Sometimes an organisation changes its name because somebody decides the old logo looks tired. Sometimes it is part of a marketing exercise. And sometimes the name simply stops being big enough for the community it has come to represent.
For us, it was the latter.
Before there was Naturism Wales, there was the North Wales Naturist Society — NWNS.
It is an important part of our history, and one we have no desire to erase. In many ways, the values that define Naturism Wales today were forged during those earlier days: bringing people together, creating opportunities for genuine social naturism and building a community in which people could feel comfortable simply being themselves.
But communities evolve.
Where It Began
North Wales Naturist Society was created with a deliberately local identity. As its name suggested, its focus was North Wales and bringing together naturists who often had relatively few opportunities to meet other like-minded people locally.
One of the places associated with that period was Halkyn Castle Woods in Flintshire, where NWNS held naturist gatherings and camping events.
Search the internet today and you may still encounter references to North Wales Naturist Society and Halkyn Castle Woods. Some older articles and directories continue to describe NWNS as though it is a current organisation operating from the site.
That information belongs to an earlier chapter of our story.
North Wales Naturist Society is no longer the current identity of the organisation, and Halkyn Castle Woods is not a current Naturism Wales venue.
NWNS evolved into Naturism Wales.
Why Naturism Wales?
The change was about considerably more than shortening a name.
A community originally centred upon North Wales had begun developing a much wider purpose. Naturism does not conveniently stop at a county boundary, and neither did the people who wanted to be part of what we were creating.
Naturism Wales became the natural next chapter.
The new identity reflected an ambition to build something relevant to naturists throughout Wales while retaining the community principles upon which everything had begun.
Today those principles remain remarkably simple:
Acceptance, Kindness, Respect & Community.
They are not corporate words chosen to decorate a website. They describe the sort of community we believe naturism deserves.
More Than Somewhere to Take Your Clothes Off
Perhaps the biggest development between those early NWNS days and Naturism Wales today has been our understanding of what a naturist organisation can actually be.
Naturism is sometimes presented primarily through places: a beach, club, swim, campsite or holiday destination.
Those places matter enormously. They give us opportunities to experience naturism together.
But a community is ultimately made from people rather than places.
For some people, discovering naturism can be transformative. It can challenge years of anxiety about appearance, ageing and the impossible standards against which human bodies are routinely judged.
For others, it is much simpler. They enjoy being naked. They enjoy good company. They enjoy the extraordinary ordinariness of sitting around chatting with people without clothes getting in the way.
Both experiences are equally legitimate.
That understanding has helped shape Naturism Wales into something broader than the organisation from which it grew.
Our Past Still Matters
There is a temptation whenever something evolves to draw a line underneath what came before it.
We don’t want to do that.
NWNS matters because without North Wales Naturist Society, there would be no Naturism Wales.
The people we met, the events we organised, the things that worked brilliantly and the occasional things that didn’t all contributed to what came afterwards.
Organisations learn in much the same way people do.
You try things. You listen. You make mistakes - lots of mistakes - but you listen, learn and evolve.
You discover what your community values. You change things that aren’t working and protect the things that are.
Eventually you look around and realise that what you have built has become something rather different from what you originally imagined.
That isn’t failure of the original idea.
It is growth.
Setting the Historical Record Straight
Because the internet rarely forgets anything, old information about NWNS remains online.
That can occasionally cause confusion.
For clarity, North Wales Naturist Society (NWNS) was the earlier identity from which Naturism Wales developed. References describing NWNS as currently operating naturist activities or camping at Halkyn Castle Woods are historical and should not be relied upon as current information.
Current information about our community, events and work is published by Naturism Wales.
We think that distinction matters, particularly for somebody discovering naturism for the first time. Nobody should make plans based upon an event, venue or organisation that has subsequently changed.
But we’re equally proud to acknowledge where we came from.
From North Wales to Wales
There is something rather satisfying about looking back.
What began with a geographically specific name has developed into a community with a much bigger conversation about naturism in Wales: our experiences, our countryside, wellbeing, travel, culture, events, body acceptance and the simple pleasure of living comfortably in our own skin.
And we’re still evolving.
We probably always will be.
Because Naturism Wales isn’t supposed to be a finished product. It is a community shaped by the people participating in it and by the principles we choose to protect along the way.
The name changed.
The geography expanded.
The ambitions grew.
But the fundamental idea survived the journey:
Every Body Matters.
And perhaps the most interesting part of our history isn’t where we started at all.
It’s where we go next.
