My Coat Has Been Living a Double Life

November has barely started and my winter coat has already embarrassed me in public.

I pulled it out of the cupboard this morning, shook it once, and heard the distinctive rattle of a woman who hasn’t checked her pockets since March.

Out came a receipt so faded it could have been written by a Victorian shopkeeper, two hair bobbles, a pebble, and a tiny plastic dinosaur.

The dinosaur was particularly unsettling. I don’t remember buying it, borrowing it, or agreeing to look after it. Yet there it was, staring at me as though I owed it money.

Naturally, instead of getting on with my day, I decided to conduct a full investigation.

Left pocket: three coins, a paperclip, and a shopping list containing only the word ‘onions’ underlined twice. Why twice? Was there an onion emergency? Did I ever resolve it?

Right pocket: a lip balm without a lid, a single glove, and what appeared to be a conker. The conker had been in there long enough to qualify for its own council tax bill.

Then I found a handwritten note saying, ‘Remember Thursday.’

That was it. Not which Thursday. Not what I was supposed to remember. Just Thursday, looming mysteriously over my entire autumn.

I stood in the hallway trying to reconstruct six months of decisions from pocket debris.

Somewhere in the middle of this, one of my children asked why I was holding a dinosaur and muttering about vegetables.

I said I was organising.

‘You look like you’re losing a court case,’ came the reply.

Fair.

After ten minutes, I had made three piles: Keep, Bin, and Things That Require Further Emotional Processing.

The third pile was mostly the dinosaur.

I put the coat on, pleased with my progress, and reached into the inside pocket for my keys.

A folded £10 note.

Suddenly, this wasn’t a cleaning exercise. It was a treasure hunt. A profitable one.

So I’m calling it a successful Sunday, even though I’m now late, the hallway looks worse, and I still have absolutely no idea what happened on Thursday.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever discovered in a coat pocket?
