National Growing for Wellbeing Week (2–8 June)

There is something profoundly human about placing our hands in the soil, planting a seed, and patiently watching it grow.

National Growing for Wellbeing Week celebrates the positive impact that gardening and growing food can have on our mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. Across the UK, people are being encouraged to reconnect with nature, spend time outdoors, and discover the simple satisfaction that comes from nurturing life.

These ideas resonate deeply with the values that underpin our naturist community in Wales.

At its heart, naturism is about authenticity, wellbeing, respect, and connection. It encourages us to slow down, step away from the pressures and expectations of modern life, and rediscover a more natural relationship with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.

Gardening offers many of the same rewards.

When we tend a garden, cultivate vegetables, nurture flowers, or simply care for a patch of land, we become participants in nature rather than observers of it. We learn patience, appreciation, and humility. We discover that growth takes time and that every living thing has value.

These lessons mirror many of the principles that naturists hold dear.

In a world that often measures people by appearance, status, or achievement, naturism reminds us that every person has inherent worth. Likewise, a garden teaches us that every seed, every plant, and every stage of growth matters. Some flourish quickly, others slowly, but each contributes to the richness and diversity of the whole.

Growing food also helps us appreciate the resources we sometimes take for granted. A single tomato, potato, or lettuce leaf represents weeks or months of care, sunlight, water, and attention. This awareness can foster gratitude and respect, not only for the food we eat but also for the people and environments that sustain us.

For many naturists, gardening offers a unique sense of freedom and connection. Feeling the warmth of the sun, the breeze on the skin, and the earth beneath our feet can create a powerful sense of belonging within the natural world. It is not about the absence of clothing; it is about being fully present in the moment and experiencing nature directly and honestly.

Research consistently shows that gardening can reduce stress, improve mood, encourage physical activity, and support mental wellbeing. Naturism seeks many of these same outcomes. Both provide opportunities to step away from daily pressures and reconnect with what truly matters.

Perhaps most importantly, both gardening and naturism remind us that wellbeing grows best in community.

Gardens are often places where knowledge, seeds, produce, and friendships are shared. Naturist communities thrive in much the same way. We support one another, encourage participation, celebrate diversity, and create spaces where people feel accepted and valued for who they are.

As we mark National Growing for Wellbeing Week, perhaps there is an opportunity for all of us to plant something—whether that is a vegetable, a flower, a community project, a new friendship, or simply a little more kindness in our daily lives.

Growth begins with small actions.

A seed planted today may become tomorrow’s harvest.

A welcoming conversation today may become tomorrow’s friendship.

A community nurtured with care today may flourish for generations.

At Naturism Wales, we believe that wellbeing grows when people feel accepted, respected, and connected. This week reminds us that some of life’s most meaningful rewards come not from rushing, but from nurturing—ourselves, our communities, and the world around us.

Happy National Growing for Wellbeing Week.
