I Lost a Conversation with a Sheep

Yesterday was International Nude Day, and I decided to spend it exploring the Afan Valley.

It seemed like the perfect excuse to disappear into the Welsh countryside with a flask of coffee, something nice for lunch and absolutely no timetable whatsoever.

The drive there was beautiful. The further I travelled into the valley, the more the roads narrowed, the trees grew taller and life seemed to slow down.

Sometimes Wales has a wonderful way of reminding you that there’s no rush.

I wandered through woodland paths where the only soundtrack was birdsong and the occasional crunch of dry leaves beneath my boots. The recent sunshine had left everything warm and fragrant, with the scent of pine hanging in the air.

Eventually I found a spot overlooking the valley that was simply too beautiful to walk past.

So I stopped.

Lunch tasted better than it probably should have.

Coffee always seems to taste better outdoors.

And a good book somehow becomes even better when there isn’t a clock demanding your attention.

At one point I became convinced I was being watched.

Not by another walker.

Not by a curious cyclist.

By a sheep.

It stood on the opposite hillside looking directly at me with the sort of expression only a Welsh sheep can manage.

Completely unimpressed.

I smiled.

It continued chewing.

I nodded politely.

It continued chewing.

For a full minute we maintained what I can only describe as a deeply meaningful conversation in complete silence.

Eventually it wandered off, undoubtedly to tell the others it had encountered yet another slightly peculiar human enjoying the sunshine.

I chose to take that as approval.

The longer I sat there, the more I realised that International Nude Day had never really been about taking your clothes off.

It was about taking everything else off for a while too.

The pressure.

The rushing.

The endless notifications.

The feeling that you should always be somewhere else doing something more important.

Yesterday reminded me that doing absolutely nothing can sometimes be the most productive thing you do all week.

As the afternoon drifted by, the valley carried on exactly as it always has.

Birds floated high above the hills.

Dragonflies danced across the warm air.

The breeze moved gently through the trees.

And somewhere, I’m fairly certain, a sheep was still questioning my life choices.

Driving home, I realised I’d achieved absolutely nothing that could be measured.

No boxes ticked.

No deadlines met.

No great accomplishments.

Just a peaceful day in one of the most beautiful corners of Wales.

And somehow…

…that felt like more than enough.

Question of the day:

What’s the funniest encounter you’ve ever had while out walking in the Welsh countryside?
