Is Naturism Safe?

It is one of the first questions many people ask before joining any naturist community.

“Will I feel safe?”

At Naturism Wales, the answer isn’t simply yes—it’s this is one of our highest priorities.

We believe people can only truly relax when they feel safe, respected and accepted. That’s why safety isn’t an afterthought or a policy tucked away in a folder. It is woven into everything we do, from the moment someone applies to join our community to the friendships they build years later.

Our aim isn’t simply to organise events.

Our aim is to create a community where people genuinely feel they belong.

A Community Built on Trust

Trust isn’t something that can be demanded. It has to be earned.

When someone joins Naturism Wales, they are placing their trust in us and in every other member. We recognise that responsibility and take it seriously.

Every membership application goes through an identity verification process before being carefully reviewed. We take time to understand who people are before welcoming them into our community because protecting our members will always be more important than increasing our numbers.

Simply put, we’d rather be known as one of the safest naturist communities than one of the largest.

Safeguarding Is Everyone’s Responsibility

Every organised Naturism Wales event has designated Safeguarding Officers whose role is to support the wellbeing of everyone attending.

They’re there to listen, guide, help and, where necessary, act.

Alongside them are experienced volunteers who understand that kindness, respect, privacy and consent are fundamental to everything we do.

Safeguarding isn’t about creating rules for the sake of rules.

It’s about creating an environment where

people feel comfortable enough to laugh, relax, make friends and simply enjoy being themselves.

Because when people feel safe, community naturally flourishes.

Our Safer Spaces Commitment

Our Safer Spaces Policy reflects the values that define Naturism Wales.

We welcome people from every walk of life regardless of age, gender, sexuality, disability, ethnicity, faith or background.

Everyone deserves dignity.

Everyone deserves respect.

Everyone deserves privacy.

Everyone deserves to feel accepted.

We have zero tolerance for harassment, bullying, intimidation or behaviour that undermines another person’s wellbeing. Every member shares responsibility for helping maintain the warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes our community so special.

Working Together

Safety is strengthened through partnership.

Naturism Wales works positively with local, regional and national organisations where appropriate, including landowners, local authorities and police services.

By maintaining open and professional relationships, we help ensure our activities are responsibly organised, legally compliant and respectful of everyone sharing public spaces.

Good communication builds confidence.

Confidence builds trust.

Trust creates safer communities for everyone.

Naturism Beyond Organised Events

Naturism isn’t something we only experience at organised events.

For many of us, it’s simply part of everyday life.

We enjoy time in our gardens, relax at home, walk through the Welsh countryside, visit beaches, go wild swimming or spend quiet moments reconnecting with nature.

Whether you’re with friends or enjoying your own company, safety should always remain part of the experience.

Whenever possible, enjoy naturist outings with others. There is reassurance in shared experiences, and friends naturally look out for one another. They notice when someone needs help, offer support when plans change and make every adventure a little safer.

If you choose to head out alone, a little preparation makes all the difference.

Carry a fully charged mobile phone.

Pack a small first aid kit.

Take plenty of drinking water.

Check the weather before you leave.

Plan your route.

And always let somebody know where you’re going and when you expect to return.

These aren’t naturist rules.

They’re sensible outdoor habits that help everyone return home safely.

Being Mindful of Others

Naturism is perfectly compatible with kindness and consideration.

Although naturism is lawful in Wales when practised responsibly, many people may never have encountered a naturist before. Sometimes surprise is simply the result of unfamiliarity rather than objection.

That’s why we encourage members to be ambassadors for our community wherever they go.

Carry a lightweight cover-up with you whenever you’re out enjoying naturism. Not because there’s anything wrong with being naked, but because circumstances can change. You may unexpectedly pass through a busier area, need to speak with emergency services, assist someone who requires help or simply wish to put another person at ease.

Having a cover-up available demonstrates courtesy, maturity and respect.

Likewise, if someone appears uncomfortable, there’s rarely any benefit in confrontation or trying to prove a point. A smile, a friendly greeting and, where appropriate, covering up or quietly moving on often says far more about our values than any debate ever could.

Naturism has never been about forcing our philosophy upon others.

It’s about quietly living it.

When we show patience, understanding and respect for those around us, we help create positive encounters that leave lasting impressions and strengthen the reputation of the wider naturist community.

The Greatest Safety Is Community

Policies matter.

Training matters.

Safeguarding matters.

But perhaps the greatest protection any community can offer is knowing that people genuinely care about one another.

It’s the friend who notices you’ve gone quiet.

The volunteer who checks you’ve arrived safely.

The conversation over a cup of coffee.

The reassuring smile offered to a nervous newcomer.

The message asking if you got home alright.

These small moments build something much bigger than safety.

They build trust.

They build friendships.

They build belonging.

At Naturism Wales, that’s what safety truly means.

Not simply protecting people from harm, but creating a community where everyone feels welcomed, valued, supported and free to be themselves.

Because when people feel safe, they stop worrying about fitting in…

…and start enjoying the freedom of simply belonging.
