When the Light Changes

There is something about this time of year.

The evenings arrive earlier, the temperature drops and life seems to retreat indoors. For many people, that change is pleasant. For others, it can quietly become difficult.

The NHS recognises Seasonal Affective Disorder as a form of depression associated particularly with winter, with reduced daylight thought to affect sleep patterns and mood. But you do not need a diagnosis of SAD to notice that October can feel different. Energy drops.

Motivation changes. We see less of people. (NHS)

For naturists, I think there is another layer too. Summer naturally gives us more opportunities to be outside, walk, swim, camp, travel and simply spend time together. As autumn arrives, some of that contact disappears almost overnight.

That is why community matters just as much now as it does on a warm summer afternoon.

Perhaps this week, think about somebody you haven’t heard from recently. Send the message.

Make the phone call. Invite them for a coffee.

Sometimes the person who has gone quiet isn’t asking for help.

They may simply be hoping somebody notices.
