Why Does Coming Home to a Slow Cooker Feel So Good?

Wellness & Wellbeing with Dave | Thursday 22 October 2026
There's something wonderfully reassuring about opening the front door on a cold October evening and being greeted by the smell of a proper homemade stew.
The wind might be howling outside, the day's been long, and everyone's asking what's for tea. But there's no panic. Dinner has been quietly taking care of itself for hours.
That's the beauty of a slow cooker, and I reckon we sometimes underestimate how much pleasure a simple family meal can bring.
One of my autumn favourites is a hearty beef and vegetable stew. Nothing fancy. Just tender beef, potatoes, carrots, onions and a rich gravy, slowly cooked until everything is beautifully soft.
It's the sort of food that makes you want to pull up a chair and stay awhile.
There's good nutritional sense behind it too. Lean beef provides protein, iron and vitamin B12, while the vegetables contribute fibre, vitamins and minerals. The British Heart Foundation also highlights how slow cooking can make preparing meals from scratch easier, often with very little added fat.
But the pleasure goes beyond nutrition.
Think about the comfort of familiar smells, the satisfaction of a warm meal after a chilly day and the opportunity to sit together without everyone rushing off somewhere.
A family meal doesn't have to be a grand occasion. Sometimes sharing an ordinary Thursday supper is enough to make home feel particularly welcoming.
As a naturist, I appreciate those uncomplicated comforts. Being relaxed and naturally ourselves at home, enjoying good food and good company, is part of year-round naturist living.
And perhaps the greatest advantage is that the hard work happens earlier in the day, leaving us more time to enjoy the evening.
You don't need expensive ingredients or impressive cooking skills. Just a little preparation, a few hours of patience and something worth gathering around the table for.
What's the one hearty autumn meal that always makes your house feel like home?
