World Environment Day: Reconnecting with the Natural World

Every year on 5th June, World Environment Day encourages people across the globe to reflect on their relationship with the natural world and consider how we can all play a part in protecting it for future generations.

For many people, environmental awareness begins with recycling, reducing waste, or making more sustainable choices. These actions matter greatly. Yet there is another, often overlooked, aspect of environmental responsibility: developing a genuine connection with the world around us.

This is something naturists have understood for generations.

Naturism is often described as a way of living in harmony with nature. While social nudity may be the most visible aspect of naturism, the deeper principle is about connection. Connection to ourselves, to one another, and to the environment that sustains us all.

When we spend time outdoors without the barriers and distractions of modern life, we often experience nature differently. We notice the warmth of the sun, the movement of the wind, the feel of grass beneath our feet, and the sounds of wildlife around us. These simple experiences remind us that we are not separate from nature—we are part of it.

In Wales, we are fortunate to be surrounded by some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world. From our rugged coastlines and sandy beaches to our mountains, forests, rivers, and valleys, the Welsh landscape offers countless opportunities to reconnect with the natural environment.

That connection can inspire respect.

When we value the places we enjoy, we are more likely to protect them. We become more conscious of the impact we have on the world around us. We take our litter home. We support conservation efforts. We encourage others to appreciate the beauty of nature responsibly. Small actions, multiplied across communities, can make a meaningful difference.

The values shared within the naturist community—respect, responsibility, acceptance, and appreciation for our shared humanity—are closely linked to environmental stewardship. Caring for people and caring for the planet are not separate ideas. Both begin with recognising that we are all connected.

World Environment Day is therefore more than a reminder to protect the environment. It is an invitation to rediscover our place within it.

Whether you spend today walking along a Welsh beach, sitting quietly in a garden, exploring a woodland path, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the natural world around you, consider the gift that nature provides every day.

The environment is not something we merely visit. It is our home.

At Naturism in Wales, we celebrate the freedom, wellbeing, and sense of belonging that come from living closer to nature. On this World Environment Day, we invite everyone to pause, reconnect, and remember that protecting the natural world begins with valuing our relationship with it.

Because when we feel connected to nature, caring for it becomes second nature.
