528 Hz: Healing Frequency or Simply a Sound That Helps Us Slow Down?

Over the past few years, you’ve probably noticed more music labelled 528 Hz appearing across YouTube, Spotify and the wider wellbeing world.

It’s often called the “love frequency”, with claims ranging from reducing stress and promoting emotional balance to lowering cortisol and even repairing DNA.

Those are some fairly extraordinary promises.

So rather than either believing everything we’re told or dismissing the whole thing as nonsense, I thought we could do something more useful.

Let’s take our clothes off, turn the noise down and see what actually happens.

What Is 528 Hz?

Hertz simply measures frequency. A 528 Hz tone completes 528 cycles each second.

There has been some scientific interest in 528 Hz, including small experimental studies investigating physiological and psychological responses to music using this frequency.

But that needs putting into perspective.

There is currently not strong clinical evidence demonstrating that 528 Hz possesses unique healing properties, repairs human DNA or treats illness. Some of the claims circulating online go considerably further than the research allows.

That doesn’t mean listening to it is pointless.

Quite the opposite.

Music and sound can affect how we feel, and relaxation, music and periods of quiet attention can be valuable parts of wellbeing. We simply don’t need to turn an enjoyable experience into medicine before it is allowed to matter.

Take Your Clothes Off

Here’s where I think we naturists can make this experiment rather more interesting.

Find somewhere private, comfortably warm and quiet.

Then get naked.

Not because nudity somehow activates 528 Hz. There’s certainly no evidence for that.

Do it because deliberately removing our clothes can also become a signal that, for the next few minutes, we’re stepping away from everything else.

No waistband.

No shoes.

No watch.

Put the phone somewhere you can hear the music without being tempted to pick it up.

Sit or lie somewhere comfortable and give yourself ten minutes.

Don’t Try to Achieve Anything

Choose some 528 Hz music and simply listen.

You don’t have to sit cross-legged.

You don’t have to breathe in a particular pattern.

You certainly don’t have to become enlightened before the track finishes.

Just be naked, comfortable and still.

Notice the sound.

Notice your breathing without trying to control it.

Notice where your body touches the chair, bed or floor.

If thoughts arrive, let them. You haven’t failed at relaxation because you suddenly remembered that the bins need putting out.

When the music finishes, don’t immediately reach for your clothes or phone.

Stay naked and still for another minute.

Ask yourself:

Has my breathing changed?

Have my shoulders relaxed?

Is my jaw less tense?

Do I feel calmer?

Or do I feel exactly the same?

There is no correct answer.

Perhaps Nakedness Is Part of the Point

This is the part that interests me most.

Naturism is sometimes described simply as not wearing clothes, but those of us who live it know there can be something more deliberate about nakedness.

We stop covering the body.

We stop decorating it.

And, occasionally, we can stop asking it to perform.

For ten minutes your body doesn’t need to become slimmer, stronger, younger, healthier or more attractive.

It can simply be your body.

That doesn’t prove anything about 528 Hz.

But perhaps it gives us an opportunity to experience sound differently because we’ve deliberately removed some of the distractions surrounding it.

Sound baths, singing bowls, chanting, meditation and frequency-based music can all have a place within holistic wellbeing for people who find them meaningful. What we shouldn’t do is turn personal experience into unsupported medical fact or use complementary practices as substitutes for appropriate healthcare.

I’m perfectly comfortable with that middle ground.

I don’t need to believe that 528 Hz is secretly repairing my DNA.

If ten minutes spent naked, comfortable, listening rather than scrolling leaves me feeling a little quieter than I did before, that is valuable enough.

Sometimes wellbeing doesn’t require a miracle.

Sometimes we just need to remove the clothes, remove the distractions and turn the volume of life down for ten minutes.

Would you try ten minutes naked with 528 Hz music — and what would you notice when the sound stopped?
